Born to Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe, Sonja Kohn grew up in a small Jewish community in Vienna. Sonja Kohn moved with her husband Erwin Kohn to Milan, Italy in the 1970's and started an import-export business.
Sonja Kohn founded the Bank Medici in Vienna in 1984. In 1985, Sonja Kohn and her husband moved to Monsey, New York. Sonja Kohn and her husband Erwin Kohn founded a small brokerage firm, the Eurovaleur Inc. In New York City she became known as “Austria’s woman on Wall Street.”
Sonja Kohn and her husband moved back to Vienna in the 1990's. In Vienna Kohn worked with Gerhard Randa of Bank Austria. The Bank Medici was restarted in 2003 as an Aktiengesellschaft. Sonja Kohn holds 75 percent of its shares and is head of the bank's supervising board. Sonja Kohn also became a consultant of the Vienna Stock Exchange and joined the membership of the Italian Finlombardia bank's supervisory board.
