Peter Andreas Thiel

Peter Andreas Thiel was born in 1967 and is an American entrepreneur, hedge fund manager, libertarian and venture capitalist. With Max Levchin, Thiel co-founded PayPal and was its CEO. He is currently the president of Clarium Capital, a global macro hedge fund with more than $2 billion under management, and he is also a managing partner in The Founders Fund, a $275 million venture capital fund he launched with Ken Howery and Luke Nosek in 2005. He was one of the early investors in Facebook and sits on the company’s board of directors.

Early Life

Peter Andreas Thiel was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, and was raised in Foster City, California, Thiel was a US-rated Chess Master and one of the highest ranked under-21 years old players in the country. He majored in 20th century philosophy as an undergraduate at Stanford University and is an avowed libertarian. He established The Stanford Review which is currently the university’s main conservative/libertarian newspaper.

Career

After receiving his J.D. from Stanford in 1992, Peter Andreas Thiel clerked for Judge Edmondson of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, practiced law and then worked at trading derivatives. He eventually established Thiel Capital Management, a multi-strategy fund, in 1996. After co-founding PayPal, Thiel made the company public in February, 2002, and sold it to eBay for USD 1.5 billion later that year. His 3.7 percent stake in PayPal was worth approximately $55 million when the firm was acquired.
