Leon A. Gorman is the Chairman of the Board for L.L. Bean, Inc. Graduating from Bowdoin College in 1956, he spent four years in the Navy before starting at L.L. Bean in 1961. He became president of the company in 1967 and remained as such for 30 years. He took the company, during that time, from a $4.75 million catalog company to one that has over a billion dollars in yearly sales and is a multi-channel enterprise. In 2001, he relinquished his responsibilities as company president and became Chairman of the Board. In 1992, he was inducted into the Direct Marketing Association Hall of Fame and he was also a recipient of the USPS Partnership for Progress Award. In 2006, Leon Gorman published a book about his L.L.Bean legacy and experience. Entitled L.L.Bean: The Making of an American Icon, the book offers great insights into the history and culture of the company.
