Thomas R. Hudson Jr. lived and grew up in suburban Braintree, Massachusetts, 10 miles south of Boston, according to Pirate documents. Hudson told business colleagues that his parents ran an office cleaning company. Braintree, established in 1640, has quite a history. It was the birthplace of two U.S. presidents, John Adams and John Quincy Adams. The town seal shows an arm brandishing a saber. In 1988, Hudson graduated from Babson College with a BA in entrepreneurial studies.

After earning an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 1993, he went to work for New York-based Merrill Lynch & Co. trading distressed bank loans.
At the beginning, Thomas Hudson Jr. thrived on Wall Street. In April 1997, Goldman Sachs offered him a position for $1 million a year, according to Goldman Sachs’s offer letter.
Thomas R. Hudson Jr. later said in court filings that he made $10 million for Goldman Sachs in 1997 and an additional $15 million for it in 1999, the year this private partnership went public on the New York Stock Exchange.
