Henry Kravis was born in 1944 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He attended Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California where he majored in economics, graduating in 1967. In 1969 Kravis received his MBA from the Columbia Business School in New York.
Kravis is one of the co-founders of the private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co, which has more than $62 billion in assets under management. Kravis is estimated to have a net worth of $4 billion and is ranked by Forbes at America’s 88th most wealthy man, and the 281st richest in the world.
After working at several jobs in the financial sector in New York City, Kravis, along with first cousin George Roberts, went to work for Bear Stearns. They become partners at Bear Stearns while they were still quite young, 30 and 31 years old. At Bear Stearns they worked under the corporate finance manager Jerome Kohlberg, Jr.
In 1976 tensions had built up enough to cause Kravis, Roberts and Kohlberg to leave Bear Sterns. In the same year Kohlberg Kravis & Roberts was launched.
