BUPA is the UK’s largest (private) healthcare organization, spanning three continents, boasting over 10 million customers in more than 200 countries. As a private entity, it provides an alternative to the UK’s tax-funded National Health Service (NHS). Established in 1947 when 17 British provident associations grouped together to provide the public with healthcare. When it was first launched, BUPA just offered private health insurance, but then it set up its own privately run hospitals. When it was first founded, there were 38,000 individuals registered, which has today expanded to 11 million members worldwide.
