Founded in 1895 by John C. Lincoln with a capital investment of $200, the Lincoln Electric Company first produced electric motors of the founder’s own design.
Through the years the company continued to expand into other products, including battery chargers for electric vehicles. In 1911 Lincoln Electric introduced the first variable voltage, single operator, portable welding machine in the world.
By 2011 the company earned a record amount with sales reaching $2.7 billion, stimulated by increased international demand and growth through mergers and acquisitions. Also in 2011 Lincoln completed the construction of a 443-foot-tall, 2.5 megawatt wind turbine at its global headquarters and manufacturing campus in Cleveland, Ohio. The wind turbine is expected to produce as much as 10 percent of Lincoln’s energy needs for its operations; cost savings estimated at about $500,000 per year.
