In 1985, David H. Murdock took over leadership of Castle and Cooke (owner of the Dole Food Company), which, at the time, was close to bankruptcy. He turned its real estate portfolio into residential and commercial properties and led Dole into becoming the world’s largest fruits and vegetables producer. In 2003, Murdock acquired Dole, and today, it trades on the NYSE. This purchase resulted in him taking over the ownership of 98% of Lana’I, Hawaii’s sixth largest island, the interest of which he later sold.
