Eagle Bulk Shipping, one of the largest dry bulk shipping companies in the world, was founded in 2005 by Sophocles N. Zoullas. Based in New York City, Eagle Bulk Shipping is the owner of one of the world’s largest fleets of Supramax dry bulk carriers, which are designed to haul dry cargo such as steel and coal over long distances. Supramax vessels are a large container ship which can typically carry between 50,000 and 60,000 deadweight tons (dwt) but are relatively small in size. The smaller size of the Supramax vessel makes them more versatile then their larger counterparts, allowing them access to smaller, and thus a larger number of ports around the world. Eagle Bulk uses the Supramax to its advantage by chartering its vessels for periods of time from one to three years, thereby avoiding some of the day-to-day volatile of the worldwide shipping market.
