Born in 1868 in Kingston, New York, Edgar F. Luckenbach was a shipping magnate who inherited the Luckenbach steamship company from his father, Ludwig Luckenbach, when he died in 1906. At the time that Edgar began to work for his father the family business was only a towing service for boats on the Hudson River. When Edgar took over as president of the company upon Ludwig’s death, Edgar moved the office from Brooklyn to 120 Wall Street in Manhattan. By that time his ships were already sailing internationally as trading vessels. Luckenbach had the company incorporated in 1913. Edgar senior remained the head of his shipping company until he died in 1943, when his son from his third wife Andrea Fenwick, inherited the company.
