Edward S. Lampert: ESL Investments

Edward S. Lampert is the founder of the ESL Investments, Inc Co.., a private investment company, and the Chairman of Sears Holdings Corporation (SHLD). Since founding ESL Investments in 1988, at the age of 25, he has racked up returns averaging 29% a year.

Investing Philosophy:

Just like Warren Buffett, Lampert focuses mature and easily understandable businesses that have strong cash flows. He focuses on a company’s ability to generate large amounts of cash over the long term. However, unlike Buffett, Lampert is less focused on the management team potential because he is willing to implement changes in the companies in which he invests. Lampert has significant experience investing in the retail industry.

Lampert’s investment style would be described as “concentrated value”, often focusing on the retail sector. Lampert typically holds his investments for several years and generally has between three and fifteen stocks. His investment style seems similar tothat of the financier Warren Buffett. He has been mainly credited for forming and merging Kmart and Sears into the Sears Holdings company.
