Founded in 1921 when two Norwegian insurance companies merged as the General Casualty and Surety Reinsurance Corporation. The name was change to General Reinsurance Corporation in 1923 when American investors bought the company. General Reinsurance asserted in 1929 that it would only be a direct re-insurer. In the 1950s General Reinsurance began writing reinsurance globally, growing in this niche during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1980 General Re Corporation, the parent holding company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
