Herbert Marcus was born in 1878 in Kentucky, but left for Texas after dropping out of high school. In 1899 he moved to Dallas and married Minnie Lichtenstein in 1902. Together they had four sons. The Marcus family moved to Atlanta soon after their marriage with his sister Carrie and her husband Abraham Lincoln Neiman to work for the new Coca-Cola Company. They were so successful working for Coca-Cola that the company bought out their sales rights to areas in Kansas and Missouri.
The family then returned to Dallas where the family was able to invest in retail clothing, launching what became the fabulously successful high-end retail specialty department store Neiman Marcus.
