Jeffrey Gendell

Jeffrey Gendell received his bachelors degree from Duke University, and began his career in the finance department of Smith Barney’s. He became a star investor.

Career

Jeffrey Gendell started hedge fund Tontine Partners in 1997. Well timed investments on steel and housing led to profits of more than 100% in both 2003 and 2005. Today the fund manages $10 billion in assets.

Gendell uses a macro investing style – taking large positions in select companies. Tontine Partners is an activist hedge fund. It is willing to step in and get involved in a company’s management in order to benefit the shareholders. Tontine became famous for its large, contrarian bets. When it decided to invest in wind energy, it was able to make huge amounts of money.
