Kohlberg & Company was formed when Jerome Kohlberg, Jr. left Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Company and formed his own private equity investment firm in 1987. Kohlberg was opposed to the huge leveraged buyouts that KKR was engaged in. Kohlberg led his own company in the direction of acquiring smaller, middle-market companies. By the end of 2007 Kohlberg & Company had raised six private equity funds, and had about $3.7 billion in investor commitments. Jerome Kohlberg retired from Kohlberg & Company in 1994.
