Lewis Lehr was born in Nebraska in 1921 and took over leadership of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M) in 1980 where he set to reorganizing the company’s many different operations into four major divisions. Under Lehr’s dynamic influence 3M was better able to focus on quality development and innovation. Lehr’s chief concern was investment in research and development, leading to great strides made in the health-care products division of the company. By 1986, when Lehr left 3M, revenue was up to $8.6 billion with earnings of $779 million.
