Marathon Oil Corporation split into two independent companies in 2000, in an attempt to help it take advantage of the high oil prices. Thus today, Marathon Oil Corporation is responsible for oil exploration and production assets and Marathon Petroleum Corporation is responsible for petroleum products. It was only able to make this split when the economic crisis wasn’t so intense.  Once it made this move, shares for Marathon escalated and ever since, this has been the continuing trend.
