Paul Falknor Iams was born in 1915 in Dayton, Ohio and died in 2004 in Chappaqua, New York. He was the founder of the Iams Company, famous for its high-end pet food products. Iams taught himself animal nutrition, and founded his company in 1946 after discovering that even during the Great Depression pet-owners continued to purchase pet food for their pets even in the face of severe economic hardship. By 1950 Iams was concocting his own recipes at his own Dayton-based plant.
Iams retired in 1982, selling his stake in the company to his business partner Clayton Mathile, who sold it to Proctor & Gamble in 1999 for $2.3 billion.
