Samuel LeFrak was born in 1918 in New York and grew up in Brooklyn. He attended the University of Maryland in College Park, graduating in 1940. He is responsible for the development of several well-known housing projects including Battery Park City in Lower Manhattan, LeFrak City in Queens, and Newport in Jersey City, New Jersey. In 1988 LeFrak received honors for his contributions to the world by the United Nations through LeFrak’s work with Habitat International, where he worked in conjunction with former President Jimmy Carter.
