Timothy R. Barakett: More Info

Timothy R. Barakett and his wife put their money to work for the good of mankind. They gave $333,000 to The Dalton School in New York to support the exclusive private school, and $1.1 million to Harvard University to support three different scholarship funds. Then they contributed $25,000 to the Mount Sinai Children’s Center in New York to help the pediatrics department, and $125,000 to the New York Presbyterian Hospital, in Manhattan, to advance brain tumor and epilepsy research. Timothy R. Barakett and his wife also gave $25,000 to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Founded by the actor Michael J. Fox to fund research into Parkinson’s disease, the foundation is one of the most popular causes among hedge fund managers and Wall Street types.

The New York Public Library is also a very popular cause on the Manhattan social circuit. Timothy R. Barakett, a trustee for the NYPL’s foundation, gave a $1 million donation to the library. Barakett also donated money in 2008 to The Robin Hood Foundation. The ultimate in hedge fund charities, New York-based Robin Hood was founded in 1988 by the fund manager Paul Tudor Jones in order to battle poverty in New York. A seat on its board is a coveted honor among the hedge fund elite, and its annual gala is a must attend event.
