Stanley Druckenmiller

Stanley Druckenmiller was born 1953 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is the President, CEO and Chairman of Duquesne Capital, which he founded in 1981. The fund is reported to have over $10 billion in assets. He managed money for George Soros from 1988 to 2000 as a leading portfolio manager. With an estimated current net worth of approximately $3.5 billion, he is ranked by Forbes Magazine as the 91st-richest person in America. He is reported to have earned $260 million in 2008.

Early Life

Stanley Druckenmiller graduated from the Collegiate School in Richmond, Virginia. He holds BAs in both English and economics from Bowdoin College from which he graduated in 1975. He left a three-year Ph.D. program in economics at the University of Michigan in the middle of the second semester to accept a position as a stock analyst for the Pittsburgh National Bank.

Career

Stanley Druckenmiller stared his financial career in 1977 as a management trainee at Pittsburgh National Bank after leaving a Ph.D. program at the University of Michigan. He became head of the bank’s equity research group in just one year. In 1981 he founded his own company, Duquesne Capital Management.

In 1985, he became a consultant to Dreyfus, dividing his time between Pittsburgh and New York, where he lived two days a week. in 1986, he moved to Pittsburgh full time when he was named head of the Dreyfus Fund. As part of the agreement with Dreyfus, he also continued management of Duquesne. In 1988, he started working for George Soros to replace Victor Niederhoffer at the Quantum Fund. He and Soros publicly “broke the Bank of England” by shorting the British pound sterling in 1992, supposedly earning more than $1 billion in profits. He left Soros in 2000 after suffering large losses in technology stocks. Since then he has focused full time on Duquesne Capital.
