Stephen F. Mandel Jr. is a trustee of Teach for America and a former trustee of Phillips Exeter Academy and The Children’s School. He is also a founder and board member of the Lone Pine Foundation, whose mission is to help children and families in the greater New York City area.

Stephen F. Mandel Jr. became a trustee for the Phillips Exeter Academy in 1997 and assumed leadership of the investment committee in 1999, due to Tucker Andersen ’59 retiring from the board. Under Mandel’s skilled and innovative leadership and when many other independent secondary schools, colleges and universities have seen their endowments decline, Exeter’s endowment has continued to grow.

Beyond his work life and his extensive volunteerism on for Exeter Academy, Stephen F. Mandel Jr. is also a trustee for The Children’s School in Stamford, CT. In addition, he is also a board member of the Lone Pine Foundation, the charity set up by his company to assist children and families in the greater New York City area. Steve and his wife Sue’s oldest child, Katie, finished Exeter in 2003, and their son Tom will begin his this fall.

“I enjoy volunteering for Exeter,” says Mandel. “The school is a unique place. The Harkness experience, shared by students from every quarter in a residential setting, is something special in secondary education. The faculty and administration are great people and fun to work with. And of course, the students never cease to amaze me.”
